Great Excuse ScarfI wanted to design a scarf that would have clean vertical stripes of color, with lots of softness and drape. Elsebeth Lavold's Silky Wool provided the perfect blend of silk and wool in the most scrumptious colors (gorgeous on their own and in combinations that can be subtle or striking). So, why is this pattern called the Great Excuse Scarf? To achieve those vertical color stripes, the pattern would have to call for lots of intarsia color changes (yuck), for lots of long, long seams (double-yuck), or for knittting the long way. I took this last approach, and so each row has hundreds of stitches (but there are only 62 rows). On the one hand, these long rows do not provide the more immediate gratification of knitting a scarf from top to bottom. On the other hand, the scarf provides a great excuse if you've been asked to perform some task that is less fun than knitting, as in ``Yes, dear, I'll clean the litter boxes just as soon as I finish this row.'' You're not required to mention that your row has hundreds and hundreds of stitches! The pattern includes instructions for working the scarf in three sizes (6'' X 48'', 6'' X 60'', or 6'' X 72'') and with or without fringe.
